How to type faster: 9 tips that work
Typing faster is mostly about technique and habits, not about moving your fingers harder. These tips help at any level.
1. Learn to touch type
If you type with a few fingers while looking at the keys, learning touch typing is the biggest single improvement you can make. It feels slower for a couple of weeks and then overtakes your old speed. Start with our free course.
2. Slow down to speed up
Errors are expensive. Every mistake costs the wrong keystroke, the backspace and the correct keystroke again, and it breaks your rhythm. Aim for 97% accuracy before you push your speed.
3. Keep a steady rhythm
Fast typists don't type in bursts. They keep an even pace from key to key. Our results screen shows a consistency score and a chart of your speed during the test, so you can see where your rhythm breaks.
4. Keep your eyes on the screen
Every glance at the keyboard costs time and makes you lose your place in the text. Feel for the bumps on F and J instead.
5. Practise your weak keys
Most people have a handful of keys they miss again and again. Our weak-key practice builds an exercise from exactly those keys, based on your own results.
6. Read ahead
Experienced typists read a word or two ahead of what they are typing. Your fingers can then move straight on to the next word without a pause.
7. Use the right posture
Tense shoulders and bent wrists slow you down and tire you out. See our guide to typing posture.
8. Practise little and often
Ten minutes every day is better than an hour once a week. Short sessions build muscle memory without tiring you.
9. Measure your progress
Take a typing test once a week and keep an eye on your history. Seeing your average climb is good motivation, and it shows you whether a change in technique is working.
